Engagement Photo Tips

Engagement photos are meant to capture the couple’s intimacy and the excitement of their new love. By following these engagement photo tips, you can take the best possible photos and let the couple’s personalities shine through.  And, in some cases the success of the engagement photo shoot will determine whether or not you’ll be shooting the wedding as well.

1. Get to know the couple.

One of the easiest ways to know what a couple wants out of their engagement photos is by getting to know them. Each couple is different and this should reflect in the types of pictures you take of them.

Your goal is to make the couple feel relaxed and build trust with them. This can be accomplished by maintaining an ongoing conversation and asking questions. Get them to tell you their story, what kind of wedding they are planning, who they are as people and what their future plans are.

2. Make them comfortable with being affectionate

Start by encouraging the couple to be openly affectionate with each other. However, most couples will feel awkward with public displays of affection. So, help them ease into it by taking a few random warm up shots to help break the ice. Doing this early on in a photo shoot and getting the awkwardness out of the way will help more natural moments shine through later on.

3. Listen to their ideas

Be open to inspiration before and during the shoot. If you have developed a level of comfort and trust with the couple, great ideas may come out at any time during your interaction with them. They will get excited and inspired, and that can help feed your creativity for the entire day. So, do not be happy with your pre-determined plans for the shoot. Be open to changing up the schedule and letting the couples spontaneity take the reins.
